It is only natural for human beings to second-guess themselves, occasionally. We cannot help but imagine what might have been, had we taken another road — finished school, back-packed through Europe, accepted that proposal, etc. The options are virtually endless.
Because we took the bus, we know the problems w/ the bus. Our knowledge makes the bus seem less attractive. But all our choices would have come w/ problems. That’s just the way life is. We don’t know the obstacles we would have faced on another road, the grief accepting that proposal would have caused us, etc. Only from a distance do those other options look appealing.
And, if we really had it to do over again, chances are good we’d make the same choices (and the same “mistakes”). Time changes our perspective. We forget the pressures, the uncertainties we were wrestling w/ when our decisions originally had to be made. We forget that our priorities were different at 20 y.o. than they are at 60 y.o.
Whatever road we take, we meet ourselves along the way. As we mature, we have to come to terms w/ that. It means we have to accept our shortcomings and failures, our scars and missed opportunities. Second-guessing ourselves (trying on a few fantasy lives) is part of that process. Some of the best things in our lives are, however, the result of our mistakes.

WOW!!!!! Amazing comment! You have covered every angle. It really seems that this resonated with you Anna as it did with me.
I particularly like: ‘Whatever road we take, we meet ourselves along the way…’
And I read somewhere that ‘mistakes’ are not mistakes: they are opportunities…
I think I’ve got that right, but even if I haven’t and it is a mistake …well it’s an opportunity for someone to put me right. 🙂

I couldn’t agree more with Anna’s commentary. It is wonderful to read her thoughtful and thought provoking words. We do beat ourselves up looking back instead of relishing the “Now” and embracing who we are. Thank you both Anna and Marie for making it worthwhile for me to write this poem. I fully agree that where some see pitfalls, others see opportunities. Where some see pain and setbacks others see lessons and pitstops.
But for me and the reflection I was portraying, I also see the importance of embracing change when you need to. There does come a time when we need to get off the fast lane and take another mode of transport. For me, the train is a good analogy for switching stations when you need to, changing direction or simply getting off to take a break. Enough from me. Marie – I love Music as you’ll soon find out and if you don’t mind, I’m posting a song here that I love and helps me to celebrate the bad/hardtimes because ultimately that is the DNA of who we are and who we become. AMEN!!😀

Anna, it’s good to meet you and a fellow fan of the sax to boot. I’m a sucker for the sax. I also think it’s the sexiest thing to see a woman playing a saxophone 😊

Chevvy and Anna – I am a sucker for the sax too! Not to divert from your piece of music Chevvy, but have either of you heard of a song by Joan Armatrading in which the sax is played? (I started writing before checking the title and I can’t remember it now – sorry!:(). Well, that’s when I became a sucker many years ago. I will do my homework and let you know what the song title is. 😉
And the song is ‘Love and Affection’.

Not to be dismissive about all the points you make Chevvy, because they are great points, but I want to address ‘bad/hardtimes’. Absolutely true what you say about adversity ‘making us’. I have noticed that the harder life is (in terms of hardship, poverty, abuse, rejection, abandonment, mental health issues etc) for the majority of the human race, the more we suffer and strive, the more we achieve, the more we become our best selves: Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Bob Marley, Lemm Sissay, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Vincent van Gogh, to name but a few, and ordinary folk, I have a particular name in mind, but she is so humble, she will curl up and die if I mention her here. She knows who she is. She works tirelessly in speaking out about abuse on her blog. And of course there are so many wonderful souls here on WordPress too who share with us, enlightening, encouraging and offering compassion even from a distance. I feel a song coming on! (Bette Midler) 🙂
I love your song Chevvy. I have not heard it before and thank you for introducing it to me. And yes the sax is so soulful – I love it! :))

Oh I agree with you. There are many things I have accomplished which I owe to my own “lessons” in life. Thing is, you sometimes only appreciate this retrospectively.
Glad you liked the song but now that I know more about you, I will look out for a special dedication from among my collection.
