barrels, contained, fear of living, freedom, letting go, mental freedom, metaphor, not recognising freedom when it comes, rain, relationships, self-knowledge, waiting for certain conditons to be put in place before living your life
As usual we were not prepared. But that was our way and this is not to say that our actions lacked forethought in any way, but that we had become so accustomed to the way things were, we knew only what we knew and that had been sufficient in its own way to deal with the vicissitudes of life. Strife was rife, and though the battle ground was real, the laughter that we shared, became a place where we could safely repair our armour, sharpen our wits as well as our spears to dent the onslaught of fears which like flood waters burst their dam and threatened to strike more often than we would have liked.
We plotted and planned, planned and plotted, dotted the ‘I’s and crossed the ‘T’s, and in our dreams subjected ourselves to living a life of constant ease. When the rain comes we said, things would be different. A life well-spent was our intent and bent on this and very little else, we kept an eye on the gathering storm clouds and would not allow the passage of time to dampen our resolve. We learned to make do with the drought and thought we ought to place our barrels in a place where when the rain came, not a drop would be lost. We bought enough barrels and damn the cost – what price our hopes and dreams?
When the rain came, so entrenched were we, we failed to see the raindrops. We did not hear the pitter-patter of freedom drumming on the window panes. And it pains me now to say that we did not fling the doors open wide and dance unreservedly upon the thirst-ridden earth now slowly, thankfully, surrendering to the watery saviour, releasing all that was bound and giving life anew.

Agreeing with tellingheavysecrets! Thank you for your soulful reflection in this post, Marie the Moon.
Here downunder, the new year has been very hot and dry so far, and we need more rain to quench and cool down the region. We also just had the Australia Day (26 January)!
Rain, Rein, Reign!
The Rain in Spain Reins mainly on the Reign.

Thank you SoundEagle for your kind comments. May I wish you a belated Happy Australia Day and evoke the gods of rain to reign on Australia’s plains. Were I not more humble, I would dedicate this piece of prose poetry to the day, but I fear that modesty prevents me from doing so. 🙂

SoundEagle appreciates your belated good wish and sweet thoughts, and hopes that you are not too modest to perform the rain dance to evoke and persuade the gods of rain.

You are most welcome, SE and in the interests of good neighbourliness, please alert me when the first raindrops fall on those hitherto lush Australian plains (one assumes they are rather dry due to the lack of rain), as that will mean that I have been performing the rain dance. 🙂

Hi Marie the Moon,
It finally rained a little this morning. Much more is needed. There could be more rain on the way. Keep dancing!

I was hoping I could have the day off today, SE. I have been dancing all night – but for you – anything!! Here I go … waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda … lol

Thank you for dancing all night long as Lionel Ritchie did at the Olympic game. It rained briefly about three times yesterday, Marie the Moon. Your dancing must be having some effects on the gods of rain, though it has never occurred to SoundEagle that Waltzing Matilda can be used as the musical foil for any rain dance.

Obviously my efforts are appreciated by the gods of rain and the fact that they do not question my attempt at waltzing bears testimony to this. If the gods of rain do not question it, SE, you would do well to follow suit. 🙂 One does not look a gift horse in the mouth as the saying goes …

It did rain several times in very moderate durations. Much more is still needed from the gods of rain and the evoking power of Marie’s rain dance! 🙂

I am pleased to hear this SE. The gods tell me there will be thunderstorms coming, so make sure you get your willies out. That was meant to be willies but autocorrect keeps changing the ‘e’ after ‘w’ to an ‘i’, much to my chagrin. 🙂

In Australian colloquial, toilets are called dunnies.

In Jamaica, money is called dunny. But I digress. I was talking about wellington boots though, not toilets. I wonder why wordpress does not like that word?? lol

I wonder why and how you suddenly dart to Jamaica. Perhaps your subconscious are preparing you for a rain dance by reggae in wellington boots.
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, SE. You mentioned ‘dunnies’ which is very similar to the colloquial name for money in Jamaica which I previously said was ‘dunny’. The similarities led to the tangential observation rather than an inkling towards reggae dancing in wellington boots.

That could still be a nice image or scene to behold, should the inkling eventuate . . . .

To look a Trojan horse in the mouth would be an anachronism here, since I don’t believe they have existed for centuries. That would be a mean feat … I don’t think that either of us would be able to manage that one.

Beautiful, Marie. I missed many raindrops in the past because I was too focused on what I thought was important, but probably wasn’t.

A wonderfully crafted piece, as always. I know nothing of this style of writing, but would take a stab at calling it ‘alliterative prosetry’ — would that be about right Marie? Such considerations aside, you’ve once again evoked a personal past that is at once poignant, distressing and yet (can I say?) forgiving, or perhaps propitiatory of self and other? H ❤

I’m sorry it has taken a while to get back to you H and thank you for taking the time to comment here – always appreciated. Your first question: I hope you find the answer here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prose_poetry. I also like your definition: ‘alliterative prosetry’. It sums it up nicely!
And as for the second question: how intuitive you are?!
The poem wasn’t meant to be entirely distressing – there was a small nod to your articles on ‘contentedness’ and a recent discussion we had about it being ‘within’ rather than having to go looking for it because ‘you always bring yourself with you’. So, thank you for inspiring me in that respect. 💝🌺

A beautiful post written with a fantastic poetic prose. It sings the story
of the village life.
The last paragraph / stanza is fantastic. Your can feel the freedom finally bursting
lose from the ties of the mundane and both spirit and earth breathe free.

Thank you so much Miriam for your insightful comment. Do you know, I hadn’t thought of the ‘village life’ perspective – so that was an interesting take for me. I love what you say about the last paragraph too – I’m pleased I was able to achieve that feeling of freedom bursting loose in my words – thank you.

I love your writing and what a wonderful example of how easy it is to dance in the light and good company but hard to dance in the rain. I think about this as I’m walking in the rain. Life and what you do with it is matter of how you choose to see it. Thanks for writing this and with that I will start my Saturday!

I loved your writing here Marie. Your piece reminds me of the theme song I have chosen for myself for this year which id Edith Piaf’s “No regrets” for the good or the bad. Hence I need to practice a lot more mindfulness to not miss the metaphorical rain. Hope you have a wonderful 2018! 😊

Thanks so much Chevvy. I love Edith Piaf’s “Je ne regret pas” (I’m pretty sure my spelling is inaccurate here, and should really have checked first:)), and I’m happy that this has reminded you of your aim for 2018. I hope you have a wonderful 2018 too and I must pop over to you soon …:)

Courage, soyez fort
Gros bisous.
